Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Legal Research Project
Parent Support Services Society of BC and the University of Victoria School of Social Work have partnered again for this legal research project.
Previous GRG projects helped identify a clear message from GRG: that they need more information on legal options available in order to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions about legal issues affecting their family. This project runs from September 2007 to December 2008.
The project legal advisory team is comprised of three honourary grandparents: Edna Brass, Janet Christie, and Roz Parker.
Our legal advisory members are professionals in the field of law and social work: Carol Ross (Co-Chair); Barbara Whittington (Co-Chair), Gillian Calder; Marion Gracey, Margaret Hall; Christine Hoyer; Audrey Lundquist; Forrest Nelson and Shamim Shivji.
The project coordinator and other project team members will travel throughout BC to meet grandparent groups and identify their legal issues. Meetings and group discussions will also be conducted amongst a myriad of other stakeholders (eg. MLA’s, Ministry officials, health, education and social service providers, etc.) in order to raise collective awareness about legal issues affecting GRG families. Formal research will then be conducted on specific provincial legislations, policies and regulations around GRG as primary caregivers.
Incredible value to this research will come from exploring our provincial GRG family picture and gaining deeper understanding of the legacy, wisdom and expertise GRG provide already.
The project outcome will be a resource and information booklet to assist newer GRG families feel connected to other GRG and resources that diffuse common stages of feeling overwhelmed, isolated, confused and fearful of the legal processes and Ministry involvement in their family life.
