Since 1974, PSS has learned that:

  • Parents do not want to hurt their children.
  • Behaviour change is a long-term process.
  • Many parents do not know that discipline and punishment are two different things.
  • Laws and governments, alone, do not protect children.
  • More money is not a solution but not enough money is a problem.
  • Available services are often inaccessible to those who need them most.

Child Protection Advocacy Research Project

This is a 3 year project funded by the United Way of the Lower Mainland. At present, the scope is restricted to Metro Vancouver; however, PSS is committed to securing funding that will allow for a province-wide focus.

Introduction
PSS is aware of many parents, grand-relatives and caregivers who are involved or fear involvement with the child protection system. We know it is common for anyone in this situation to have questions – about the law, their rights and responsibilities, and where to find legal help and other resources. It can also be a struggle for parents and others to voice their views and questions to social workers or in court hearings, mediations, planning sessions, home visits and other interactions with the system.

Community child protection advocates provide essential information and support to those in a parenting role who are being investigated by child protection services, whose children have been apprehended and are in Ministry care, or who are at-risk of either type of involvement. A child protection advocate may have “Advocate” in her or his job title, but not necessarily. Often they are people whose day-to-day work involves helping women, new immigrants, or children and youth.

To date, there has been scarce research into the impact of child protection advocacy on child and family well-being, and while training opportunities and resource materials for advocates do exist, few focus specifically on child protection advocacy and the field’s particular ethical considerations. We hope to change this with the Child Protection Advocacy Research Project.
