$600 COVID-19 funds for children with disabilities (Disability Tax Credit certificates)

On June 5, 2020, the federal government announced it will be providing a one-time tax-free payment of up to $600 to all persons eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (and the associated Child Disability Benefit for those under the age of 18 years). This money is in recognition of the extraordinary expenses incurred by persons with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Parent Support Services Society of BC understands that the provincial government has agreed to pass along these funds to eligible children who are “maintained” by the Ministry for Children and Family Development (MCFD) through agreements/orders such as Permanent Kinship Care (sec 54.01/sec 54.1).

A Disability Tax Credit application is completed by a physician who certifies the child to have a severe and prolonged impairment. Families with children with disabilities have until December 31, 2020 to apply for a Disability Tax Credit certificate in order to be found eligible for these funds.
