Kinship Caregivers and the Disability Tax Credit

If you are a kinship caregiver raising a child with a prolonged and significant disability, you may be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit.

If you receive maintenance payments from the Ministry for Children and Family Development or a Delegated Aboriginal Agency, you may have been advised that you are not eligible for the Child Disability Benefit and, therefore, may not have previously applied or received the Disability Tax Credit certificate.

However, for those who hold a Disability Tax Credit certificate the federal government has announced a one-time $600 payment in recognition of the extraordinary expenses faced by persons with disability during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If your child may be eligible but you never applied for the Disability Tax Credit, you must do so by September 25, 2020 to ensure eligibility for the one-time payment. Note, your application does not guarantee you will be entitled to collect this payment.
